Question by bandyemmie: Are Black Friday Deals really worth killing a Retail Employee and injuring others? Or are people that GREEDY! ?
I just read a wal mart worker was killed this morning by a greedy mob. I wonder why this happened?
NEW YORK (AP) – A worker was killed in the crush Friday after a throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains burst through the doors at a suburban Wal-Mart, authorities said.
At least four other people were injured, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island was closed.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a “tragic situation” and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.
“He was bum-rushed by 200 people,” co-worker Jimmy Overby, 43, told the Daily News. “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too. … I literally had to fight people off my back.”
Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. The man’s name was not released and the cause of death was not immediately known.
A police statement said shortly after the store’s 5 a.m. opening time, shoppers “physically broke down the doors, knocking (the worker) to the ground.”
A metal portion of the door was crumpled like an accordion.
Shoppers around the country lined up early outside stores in the annual bargain hunting ritual known as Black Friday. Many stores open early and stay open late, and some of the most dramatic bargains are available in limited quantities.
Among the bargains offered by Wal-Mart for Friday were Samsung 50-inch high definition Plasma TVs for less than 0.
Witnesses told the Daily News that before the store was closed, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the worker’s life.
“They were working on him, but you could see he was dead,” said Halcyon Alexander, 29. “People were still coming through.”
A 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital for observation, and she and the unborn baby were both reported to be OK, said Sgt. Anthony Repalone, a Nassau County police spokesman. Four or five other people suffered minor injuries, he said.
Ellen Davis, a spokeswoman at National Retail Federation, said the group knew of no other incident where a retail employee has died working on the day after Thanksgiving.
Wal-Mart is working closely with police, company spokesman Dan Fogleman said.
“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” Fogleman said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this difficult time.”
Apparently there was a shooting at a Toy’s R Us in Southern California. What the hell is going on in our world.

People act like animals over something so stupid. I am surprised that stores still do this nonsense. If they are going to behave that way I wonder how often they get into brawls in the stores? I hope these people were videotaped for a lawsuit and charges.
What do you think? Answer below!

It’s sickening that greed can push supposedly civilized individuals to behave like these shoppers. I just can’t comprehend anyone, much less thousands of people, pushing to get into a store to the point of breaking the doors off the hinges. Even animals behave better than these folks did…….
It’s the stores fault. They should know that the general population is full of stupid people. Especially Walmart. Maybe next year they’ll figure it out.
Some people really are that greedy. We all just need to realize that everyone is human, and should be treated as such.
People need to stop getting so caught up in all of their selfish needs.
Look out for others, act your age, and be respectful.
That is seriously all it takes.
That’s terrible. All for what, a TV or a Wii.
i don’t which sickens me more…
the fact that someone was killed over a few bucks worth of savings..
OR the fact that people actually trampled over a PREGNANT woman.
WTF.
this is unreal. makes me sad to be a american. I served this country and had great pride in doing so. this horrible event and many others like it make having such pride difficult. The commercialism of holidays, repulsive politicians and dirty politics, and general movement of our youth to a discusting society filled with hate, lack of respect, and plain ignorence make me sick. I think our next revolution will be a spiritual one, notice i didnt say religious. we need it. I know its not all bad, there are great things being done but cant they be done without needless deaths of decent people. truly a black friday.
I read another article, similar to this one and I honestly can’t believe the world we’re living in. A special isn’t worth a man’s life. Nothing materialistic is worth a man’s life.
As for the shooting at Toy’s R Us, it will disappoint me if the shooter thought he was going to be going home with whatever he aimed to buy.
I really hope that Wal-Mart employee’s family finds their killers, at least those who sent him to the floor…Money is the root of all evil.
This is most likely one of the saddest stories I have read. I quit doing the Black Friday shopping about 3 years ago due to the enraged crowds outside of my local Walmart. The last year I had went there were at least 6 or 7 fist fights in the parking lot over line jumping, and these women were not young they were in their 50′s at least if not older. Then witnessing several more physical fights inside the store me and my husband left without buying anything and decided it wasn’t worth it.
just goes to show how walmart doesnt care about their employees…
*sigh* poor guy, what a horrible way to die
ive never got up at 4 am to shop and see the “deals” but this year i wanted to see what the fuss was about….i let the ppl push through and waited in the back. and really there was only about 20 dollars diffrence in the prices..i dont think its worth camping out over? i left after an hour. the mall was so packed that ppl where passing out from the heat. while in the parking lot pll where fist fighting over a parking spot. i live in phx az. and it was midnight madness. now i understand the madness part. i will never do this again. in fact im glad i got most of my shoping done in aug and nov.as for the man who lost his life…wow just thinking about being stomped to death sends chills up my body. just how sick do u have to be to do that to someone? i wonder if the ppl who did that are siting at home staring at the thing thet bought and wondering if it was worth it. i hope they think about that man for the rest of there disgusting lives. and i hope they see his face everytime they look at whatever it is that was worth more then him.
I didn’t even waste my time today, because they didn’t have anything I was wanting. Note these are grown people, that’s the sad part.
i was at walmart when it happed those stupid anmiala i saw them running n breaking the the door and falling on the guy n a preg. lady :{
